TSA Cares | The US Government Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) new program assists air travelers with disabilities or medical conditions successfully clear the required airport security inspections. "TSA Cares" is a help line to assist air travelers with disabilities and medical conditions, including persons with cognitive and psychiatric conditions. Please NOTE that TSA recommends that passengers call 72 hours (i.e., 3 full days) ahead of travel for information about what to expect during screening. Also note that although not listed on the TSA Cares website, you can request a "passenger assistance officer" be assigned to the disabled traveler; this person will meet the disabled traveler at the security check-point and guide them through the security clearance, having pre-arranged any necessary special processes/accommodations. (Be aware, however, that ALL travelers MUST pass through a security clearance.) For additional strategies to ease going through the TSA security check point, see the TSA Pre✓ (aka "TSA Pre-check") program. |
TSA Pre✓ (aka TSA Pre-Check) Program | TSA Pre✓™ is a pre-screening initiative that makes risk assessments on passengers who voluntarily participate prior to their arrival at the airport checkpoint. TSA Pre✓™ allows select frequent flyers of participating airlines and members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler programs who are flying on participating airlines, to receive expedited screening benefits. **Another TSA program, “TSA Cares” suggests that some disabled flyers and persons with medical conditions may also benefit from this program as the expedited screening may ease the stress and/or medical challenges of screening.** Eligible participants use dedicated screening lanes for screening benefits which include leaving on shoes, light outerwear and belts, as well as leaving laptops and 3-1-1 compliant liquids in carry-on bags. The TSA Pre✓™ fee-based application process; applicants pay the enrollment fee (currently $85) online, or at an enrollment center. TSA Pre✓ cleared member status is good for a five-year term, after which members need to re-apply and pay another registration fee. Please NOTE that the TSA vetting process typically takes approximately 2-3 weeks. |
